“Harness restrain, a form of treatment”
An intensive course for patient-care staff within in-patient psychiatric care. The course is primarily intended for psychiatric nurses and other nurses, but even physicians, graduates and students may find it useful. The course will enrich the pupils’ knowledge of the medical restraint, and above all is aimed at increasing understanding of the medical restraint from a perspective of treatment and care.
We also offer training specifically tailored to the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.
Without a doubt, medical restraints represent the most extreme form of treatment used within in-patient psychiatric care. The Compulsory Medical Care Act and the Forensic Mental Care Act are the statutes that regulate the use of medical restraints on patients within in-patient care, BUT these laws completely lack the clinical/concrete guidelines for the very use of the medical restraint.
It is also important to point out that the training courses, which caregivers, nurses and physicians take at secondary school, college and university do not offer any specific review of any clinical guidelines, methods, practical exercises or techniques in the actual use of the medical restraint. As a result, those who begin working within in-patient psychiatry can find their first experiences with a medical restraint to be a traumatic experience for a new staff member, as well as for the patient, and in the worst cases, injuries can occur.
The course comprises two parts.
Part 1
Theory
This is where we go through the theoretical parts concerning the medical restraint such as regulations, purpose, criteria and care aspects.
Part 2
Practice
In the second part, we put medical restraints to use through role-play and practice restraining techniques and practice, with a focus on safety and care.
Course length: 3 hours.
